Helical face
Figure 1(a) shows the example of a helical face. Ca atoms of residues forming the face are shown in space filling. Here, the “anchoring” residues are 0, 7, 14, and 21. These are complemented by residues 3 and 4, 10 and 11 and 17 and 18, respectively.

Figure 2(b) further illustrates LIPS approach by showing the seven canonical helical faces each centered at one of the seven positions of the heptad repeat. The central helical wheel contains numbers that label the helical surfaces 1 through 7 that correspond to heptad repeat positions a through f around which the helical surfaces are centered.
LIPS scoring
LIPS scoring function sums up combined average entropy and average lipophilicity (TMLIP1) of the residues forming a helical face. The LIPS scores for every helical face together with the residues, which form a helical face are shown on the output screen.
